Fellow Catholics: Why did Jesus call Simon Rock or Peter when Simon was such a huge coward?

In fact even my priest in M said that maybe Simon should have been called Julie or Stacy instead because he was such a huge coward at one point and that it took him time to grow into the name of Peter and the role of The Rock. Was there a particular reason for doing that other then Simon saying what he said to Jesus about him being the Messiah?
