Why were the crusades glorified?

I don't understand this. Most crusades were just unorganized groups of peasants lead by a few landholders. All were unsuccessful and the crusades were overly violent and murderous. The crusaders attacked Constantinople which was the same city they sought to protect from Muslim control.
