Could someone explain how music is so equally interpretated?

I need a scientific explanation, of how music, or even simply a certain chord (eg. a minor chord) is interpreted as a certain sentiment (eg. melancholy) and this for the entirety of human beings. What inner workings of the brain bring us to roughly the same conclusions on the conveyed emotion attached to a chord or a series of chords? Or is this interpretation aquired by experience and therefore as a community we tend to share the same meanings for some obscure reason upon which you could enlighten me?
